Passionsspiele Eppertshausen

The Eppertshausen Passion Play is performed once every three years on Good Friday. For one day only, around 250 participants transform the streets and public spaces of this small community into an open-air stage. Around 70 amateur actors reenact the events surrounding Jesus, moving from the town hall square to the old cemetery. The plot covers Jesus's suffering from his entry into Jerusalem to his crucifixion on Golgotha.
The idea and implementation of the Passion Play in Eppertshausen came from Gisela Belzer, who was inspired by a study trip to Sicily. From the outset, the focus was on bringing together the local people, church communities and associations for this project.
The Catholic and Protestant priests supported the project from the outset. The mayor at the time was not only a supporter of the plays, but also took on a leading role as an actor. The first performance took place in 2006. The association ‘Passionsspiele Eppertshausen e.V.’ was founded in 2009.
The participants are multicultural, multi-denominational, from different faiths and now come from all over the region. The event is free of charge and is financed solely by donations. Depending on the weather, the Passion Plays attract between 1,500 and 2,500 spectators
